Ammoudara beach
The city’s largest beach is located a few kilometres
from the centre, and is easily accessible on foot by following the coastal
road, by bicycle or by bus. Ammoudara is a long sandy beach with
shallow waters stretching from the Pancretan Stadium to the mouth of
Almyros River. The beach is so large that those who seek isolation would find
quiet spots, but it is generally dominated by sunbeds and umbrellas, and in
certain points there is a lifeguard. The beach features beach bars, taverns,
restaurants, hotels and other facilities. Also, Ammoudara beach is ideal for
water sports such as windsurf and kitesurf due to the strong summer winds.
Karteros Municipal Beach
Well-organized, sandy and ideal for the summer, Karteros Municipal Beach is just a 10-minute drive from the city centre. It is also linked to the city centre by a daily regular bus service (bus to "AMNISSOS", departing from "ASTORIA"). The beach features a permanent lifeguard, clean and functional facilities for all (sunbeds, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, WC), a beach volleyball court and a racket court. It also provides a free parking area and free access to pets. The beach café serves coffee, drinks & snacks, as well as delicious meals. This year, in collaboration with Heraklion Municipality, a ramp with a special seat for people with impaired mobility will be added. The beach is available for children's parties and events.
